The Ministry of Agriculture has panned to cultivate 0.5 Mn hectares paddy in Yala season

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development P.Harrison has informed the “Lakpohora” Chairman Somachandra Jayakody to store the stock of fertilizer required for ‘Yala’ season cultivation during which it is expected to cultivate 0.5 Mn hectares of paddy lands.

Accordingly the “Lakpohora” Chairman revealed that the fertilizer requirement for “Yala” season will be 0.1 Mn. Metric tons, and 16,000 MT Urea, 11,000 MT of Muddy manure and 4000MT of Thickened fertilizer are already available in their stores. He further said that the Company has panned to import the balance amount including 47000MT of Urea from Countries such as Chaina, Russia, Indonisiya, Qatar before the end of this month at a cost of Rs.09 Billion. In addition Commercial Fertilizer Company has ordered 28,000 MT of Urea for use in the next ‘Yala’ season.

The Cultivation extent during this ‘Maha’ season is 0.8 Mn .Hectares. The Lakpohora Chairman explained the situation relating to the application of Urea. According to him the highest Urea application totaling 27,000MT from Anuradhapura district 22,000 MT from Ampara , 21,000MT from Kurunegala District, 19,500 MT from Polonnaruwa District and 14,000 MT from Batticaloa District.

The Lakpohora Company and the Commercial Fertilizer Company both state Fertilizer Companies are supplying 60% and 40% of the country’s requirement respectively. The Government’s contribution in this respect amounts to Rs.32 billion.
